Volkswagen Jetta owners are complaining about a grinding noise coming from the transmission of their vehicles. Recent customer complaints include the following:

Incident Date April 16, 2019 (Yardley, PA):  Torque converter makes a grinding sound at 1,400 rpm.

Incident Date April 9, 2019 (Longview, TX):  While accelerating, a distinct grinding noise comes from the transmission. The noise is consistently heard while the vehicle is accelerating between 25-30 mph.

Incident Date March 29, 2019 (Houston, TX):  When accelerating a grinding noise can be heard coming from the transmission between 25 mph & 35 mph.

Incident Date March 23, 2019 (Franklin, TN):  Vehicle exhibits a grinding noise while driving in low gears.

Incident Date March 19, 2019 (Idaho Falls, ID):  When in motion, around 35mph and 1200-1400 rpm, there is a grinding/rubbing/vibration sound coming from the vehicles transmission and/or torque converter.

Incident Date March 9, 2019 (Duluth, GA):  Brand new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta making grinding/rattling noise at around 30 mph. Was told by Volkswagen dealership staff/employee member that the sound is normal for all Volkswagen vehicles of the same model as well as others.

Incident Date March 1, 2019 (Allentown, PA):  Strange grinding noise coming from the engine around 30 mph when accelerating under light load.

Incident Date February 22, 2019 (Orlando, FL):  Vehicle was purchased 3 days ago and has 300 miles on it. There is a consistent metallic grinding sound between 20-40 mph. Not sure what’s going on. Online research indicates that this is a common issue and VW is aware but claims it’s normal. It certainly doesn’t sound normal.

Incident Date September 3, 2018 (Manahawkin, NJ):  2019 VW Jetta grinding/rattling/groaning noise from the torque converter. When I brought the car in for the 10,000 service, I told the service manager that the transmission was making grinding and groaning noises. The service manager said that they could not get the car to make the noise and it is just a normal sound.

What is Volkswagen’s response to the Volkswagen Jetta transmission problem?

Volkswagen has responded to customer complaints by stating that the grinding noise in the transmissions of 2018 and 2019 Volkswagen Jettas is “normal” or has denied that there is any problem with the Volkswagen Jetta transmissions.
