Volkswagen Timing Chain Settlement Message Board
The Volkswagen Timing Chain and Audi Timing Chain Class Action Settlement Administrator recently mailed out thousands of notices regarding the proposed class action settlement. The benefits vary widely from favorable to highly unfavorable depending on your vehicle’s mileage and age, whether you have already paid to repair your vehicle, and whether your timing chain or timing chain tensioner shows signs of going bad.
What are the deadlines for the class action?
According to the Volkswagen Timing Chain Settlement and Audi Timing Chain Settlement website, the deadlines in the class action lawsuit are as follows:
October 12, 2018: Exclusion (Opt Out) Deadline
October 12, 2018: Objection Deadline
November 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.: Fairness Hearing
January 25, 2019: Claim Filing Deadline
This forum is intended to allow consumers to respectfully share information, thoughts, and strategies on how to navigate this complex settlement.
If you have opted out of the class settlement, you may submit a claim below.[fc id=’11’ align=’center’][/fc]
Appealed the first denial over a year ago and now denied again. Completely bogus. The clearest timing chain failure case in history! And then engine locked up and I had to junk the Tiguan. Been driving VW for a long time but no more. Save yourself lots of headaches: don’t ever buy a VW.
My car recently started having issues that align with this lawsuit, but I was unaware of suit at the time and since it happened a little too late, I’m not sure if I qualify for this. I looked up my vin and it says no match found but my car definitely has a timing chain problem so I’m confused. My engine is rattling and has issues starting. Throwing crankshaft codes, etc and upon more research it said it’s a timing chain issue
finally got a check for $2600+ I can’t believe this is over. that took years too long.
Still waiting. Got a “denied” letter like others, provided more information (which I thought I had already provided, but they said I did not) and no response in 5 months. It’s been 3 years that VW has had my money for the repair, when is all of this getting cleaned up? Is there an authority that makes sure these things get finished? This is absurd.
Same situation here, got a letter las November for being denied after so many times that I was approved and was waiting for the check…..however I sent a response in December and just a few months back got email confirmation and voice call that again my case is approved and now waiting for money….since then I call bi weekly and nothing but the same b s .
Check came today… Thank you
Is this for timing chain or water pump
I received a letter stating that my claim was denied, saying my timing chain settlement form was incomplete. This comes after 2 years of this administrator playing games with me, submitting and resubmitting forms, stating the check was in the mail, saying my claim was accepted and I was owed $1600… now they’re saying it’s denied! I feel like the administrator it’s doing everything they can to keep as much of the money that they can get, and they’re trying to best not to pay us! My claim was accepted two years ago, a few months ago I got a… Read more »
They did the EXACT same thing to me. Not sure where to go from here. Maybe small claims court?
I actually recieved a a check 2 weeks ago for $360 or so which came with a letter stating they had under paid me in the timing belt settlement check.i had previously recieved a $7700 check last august I believe so they actually paid me the full amount I had spent on the engine…but actually ran into the water pump issue and sent a claim in so not sure if I qualify but worth a try for all this trouble vw has put us through
Just received in the mail “Ineligible VW Timing Chain Settlement Claim Form”
“Response is not satisfactory to remedy the previously described deficiencies.” Therefore your claim is ineligible in this Settlement.
I sent 40 pages of complete service history documentation and all receipts for timing chain repair.
In addition, engine froze after water pump failure and had to scrap an otherwise perfect VW
Being appealed
Just received notice of DENIAL for water pump/engine failure. I’ve driven VWs for over 4o years and this is what we get in return. Really VW?? Good Lord
My son is still waiting for the timing chain settlement. They said they sent him a check in April of 2020 but that it was never cashed. He sent a letter asking for the check to be reissued at their request. This was several weeks ago and still no check. He called this week, and they said they had to check the status and that someone would call back before the end of the week so he will give it until 10/16/2020 before calling back. It seems there should be another lawsuit for all the delayed payments.
I agree,I still am waiting for payment, but now they say claims are under a lengthy review and they don’t have a date as to when it would be completed
How is it people are getting checks when I call in they tell me they are waiting on funds from Volkswagen. Is it time we collectively get a law firm to check this out?
Which check are you talking about the timing chain one? I got that last year now I’m waiting on the water pump issue because havent heard anything but I did send a claim form because I replaced that too under 80k miles into the car
This lawsuit is BS, as my car had the same issue, I paid to get the tensioner fixed, because of a failure last summer, I thought my car would be part of the lawsuit even though the mode year is part of the law suit, but apparently it’s only for E888 engine and my car is not.. So I am out 5 grands.. total BS. My car clearly has defect, that seemed conviniently put out of the settlement.
Am I the only one left that has the claim approved but no payment? And keep getting the message that they are awaiting for funds released from vw but have no date for when it is going to happen?
Nope, I am in the exact same boat. Claim was approved in Feb for reimbursement for a motor replacement. Still awaiting payment, emailed them twice with no response.
Is this for the timing chain still or the water pump issue that’s going on now
For me, both! Apparently they coincide. An admin from Epiq let it slip that they indefinitely are related and that he’s heard a ton of nightmares about these two cases and then surprise, surprise we were disconnected and no one called me back. I called them & they said they had no information to give because their “system was down” and to call back another time. SHOCKER
I received my check for the timing chain issue last August. For the water pump I was told last week the case is settled (approved) and now they have to go through over 24k claims.
24k claims wow…well I had to go through 2 engine fixes..timing chain (I ended up swapping engine) and for the water pump it ended up being rebuilt. I did both claims I recieved my timing chain reimbursement. I dont know if I can get the water pump I did the claim but will see I dont know why not. And just to mention it my water pump went out this past week again! But fixed it reasonably. $500 plus my car has 110kmiles now smh
I received the same response a few months ago. “Funds released from VW” is very vague. I’ve owned 5 VWS over the years, never again. Some reciprocal loyalty would be nice.
Definitely not the only one! Same here
2014 Jetta GLI, 91k miles. Timing chain broke and destroyed my engine in the process. VW says new engine block ($10k – joke!) + labor is $12k and they’ll pay 50% based on the settlement, and replace the timing chain under extended warranty. I’m asking to replace with used engine – several GLI engines with far less miles found for $2,500-3k. They refuse stating it must be new only.
After reviewing the settlement docs, they say nothing about requiring replacement engine to be new. Just states “cost of repairs”. Anyone have luck getting their payout for used engine swap?
Any luck for you in getting VW to own, and pay for this issue? We are just starting down this same exact road. Any assistance is appreciated!
Has anyone received an update on volkswagen making another payment? they were supposed to send us payments in october.
I spoke with the attorney and she said that volkswagen hasnt paid them the money to send out the checks. This is getting old.
Same thing here, they say claim was approved but no word on payment. They said first 4to6 weeks back in august …after that they said the same ,then since november they keep reaching to the resource team with no response from them.Since Christmas is here I guess we will give them another year (what else can we do)
My 2011 Audi A4 timing chain broke, and as part of the VW class action settlement to which VW/Audi admits responsibility, I brought my car in for repairs to Seattle Audi. Seattle Audi told me they would only fix the timing chain issue if I replaced the engine, which would cost me $9,000 out of pocket. Since that repair cost is more than the cost of the vehicle, I declined. As a result, I am now stuck with a car that won’t run due to circumstances that were the fault of Audi, not myself. It’s my contention that Audi USA purposely gamed… Read more »
My absolute same situation other than mine is currently happening and I took my car to Audi last yea with issues was never informed of this settlement. Spent over $5k in the past year to other parts but now car is dead sitting in Hawthorne Audi and they want $9900! Mind you this al happened at the same time I was ran off the road into ditch huge pothole – insurance said they would only cover the unrelated parts since audi said that wasnot the cause of it – but it all happened the minute I had to swerve at… Read more »
Hi Jennifer. Same situation here with a 2012 Q5. 65000 miles and complete engine failure. did you take it to Hawthorne Audi in Westchester?
I am beyond frustrated – My check was mailed to the wrong address on August 14, 2019 – I wrote, called, sent emails to the address provided – Was told they have my correct mailing address – it was in my contact information -got an email yesterday that my check was mailed to the wrong address again!!! OMG I want to sue them – again – this is so ridiculous – does anyone know what I need to do or who I need to contact? – this is ridiculous!!
I filed mine pretty close to the deadline, I have not received any correspondence related to the case at all.
Hi, To those who’ve received payment, when did you file the claim? I’m wondering if they’re going in order of how they were received? Thanks
I filed in the last day of the deadline online
received incomplete reimbursement check in august 14th and trying to have lawyer talk to them about paying me for the full amount.
Please provide their reply when you do. I too received and insufficient amount compared to the terms of the lawsuit. I was told a reply should arrive in 2-3 weeks to explain.
I received payment and the payment was 5% of my dealership invoices. I reached out to the firm for an explanation and still waiting for an explanation. I am not sure what’s going on with the settlement but I thought this was full reimbursement once approved. Please help me understand what full reimbursement means at this stage.
Just came across this site today as my wife and I purchased a 2010 Wolfsberg Edition with 55k miles from the original owners about 2 months ago. Wouldn’t you know it, the check engine light came on this weekend and I’m hearing that the timing chain is off and could get costly. We had no idea about this issue and I’m having to file a claim way later than the deadline. Spoke to VW this morning and they’re sending claim information to me to fill out and submit, but couldn’t guarantee payment. Anyone else here file a claim after the… Read more »
I have had the game thing happen to me drive for less then two weeks after purchasing. Now I’m needing to replace entire engine and timing chain. I cannot afford to fix and have been out a car for almost a year now. And cannot get any answers. I purchased after settlement date. How was I supposed to know any of this would happen.
So my 2012 Q5 had a timing chain failure and the entire engine is needing replaced /per my audi dealer…. yet they do not appear to recognize this recall etc, mainly because my car’s VIN appears to not be listed……. Yet its word for word what this litigation was about, just my vin isnt in some database….. Also how can these deadlines be so tight, and no audi owner really was even aware of this mess??????
What can us folks do still? I got a q5 worth 12k and it needs 8k+ in repairs!!
Do you know what tests they performed to determine the timing chain failure? Thanks
Same issue here. Took it to Audi and they refuse to acknowledge issue. Can died last week. Needs a completely new engine.
I just received a phone call stating they were denying my claim after the receiving every single documentation needed (per a letter they sent me) to approve the claim. The claim was initially denied due to proof of odometer reading, which they sent a letter stating if i could provide a receipt of any kind showing the car under 100k in miles around the time the timing chain jumped, they would approve the claim. I over nighted a copy of an oil change receipt that was done in the same month the chain jumped showing the car under the 100k… Read more »
I am in the same boat , they are looking for any stupid reason to not pay us what we had to pay to get the car fixed. i am wondering if we can mail the court in NJ where the had the settlement agreement approved and notify them that the claim administrator is violating the settlement agreement . i will also look into hiring a lawyer . let me know if you find out about how to proceed and i will keep you updated. I really hate Volkswagen and how they get away with making us suffer financially and… Read more »
Mido- I spoke with the appointed attorney about my case and he contacted the VW attorneys to get my file. She reviewed it and pushed back telling them i need to be paid. she said i should expect to get a check in the mail. There number is 1-845-356-2570. Hope it helps.
thank you so much i will contact them .
Hi Mido,
In the same boat as well. Did you ever hire a lawyer and can you update us? I’m about to get a lawyer involved now as well!
Hi Marisa,
I contacted one of the law firms who filed the class action law suit by phone and spoke with a paralegal and she asked me to submit all the documents to her for review and she forced them to pay me most of the remaining balance .
Here is their info

She was wonderful
Good luck to you.
I was just told that my claim was denied by phone, no information why. No letter no nothing. Who can I contact.
Called to verify that I am qualified to receive a check. However, I still have not received it.
same here..they said to call back if not received by the end of this month.
I immediately filed my claim in October by mail. Had major surgery in December and recovering through January. Called to check on my status of claim all to be told they never received it. I called 4 days after the final submit date. So I was immediately denied. I forked out $6790 for a brand new engine. Already dumped another $2000 and dealing with Volkswagen’s other major issue with the Mechatronic Unit destroying my transmission. That’s another $4000 fix!!! How about VW just give away those brand new diesel vehicles all rotting away from that scandal instead of screwing over… Read more »
I wasn’t paid the full amount i submitted, My cost was was 3000$ for used engine and 945$ for labor it was done at an independent shop it just came out of warranty and it had 56000 miles on it at time of failure. they came back to me about the reason why they wouldn’t pay for the parts (used engine). it turns out that the parts shop on their invoice they wrote the VIN number of the car which the used engine came from under the description and according to Claim Administrator the VIN doesn’t match my car’s VIN… Read more »
You should call the attorney and ask how to filw
which attorney? my own or the firm that filed the class action? i Forgot the name of the firm that filed the class action
Finally received my check in the mail on Aug. 19th. Attempted to deposit it into my account and the check bounced. Had my bank contact CitiBank to see what the issue was and was told that there was not a said account in which the money would come from so that’s why the check bounced. Called the Timing Chain Litigation Customer service and they could not explain to me what was going on. They up-channeled it to the Resource team and I was told I would get a call back. It’s been a week and no call……….beyond frustrated. Anyone else… Read more »
that’s not cool, call the attorneys. I never received a check.
@Brandon,
My check just bounced as well and the resource team is giving me the same runaround. Did they ever make good on this check for you?
It cost me $3,500 to fix the issue with the timing chain and tensioner, submitted a claim form last year December 2018, I still have got no check, I feel like a person that depends on welfare just checking the mailbox at the end of the month, where the hell is my money
Engine failure due to timing chain break cost $1,500 out of pocket after VW paid the dealer. Why would anyone buy a VW again? Obvious no concern for loyalty to owner or need for owner loyalty to VW.
The new warranty on VW is crazy high now, 7yrs and like 70k miles. But fuck the rest of the previous owners eh?
I received my check yesterday. $2,500 for my 2009 Volkswagen EOS. I had an engine replacement and a separate timing chain costly repair. Glad it’s over and got something back. I see lots of complaining, but by Class Action Standards, this was a solid payout people!
Did you have over 100,000 milrs on it?
what number is everyone calling? 855-206-9873?
I call that number today Saturday, they won’t be back in business till Monday but yes that is a number that you call
Thank You!:)
how do you find out if your check is on the way?
Diane Jablonowski – from Texas.
Good question Diane I also would like to know how to find out if your check is on the way, if you find out post it up please, thank you
They received my claim and I have not received a check, I spoke to the admin today and they are sending an inquiry to the resource team for it doesn’t show a check went out for me. any one have this issue? Will additional batches of check be sent?
I have not received a check yet.
I am wondering why i received such a small percentage of how much it cost me?
they only paid me for the mechanic labor which was around 940$
they didn’t pay me for the engine cost ~3000$ and no extra 2500$ as other people received .
it was a complete engine replacement
i called them and still waiting for reply to why i am getting paid such a low reimbursement
i didn’t deposit the check .
anyone else has a similar situation ?
Well what was the cost ,how many miles did it have and was it a independent shop?
The cost was was 3000$ for used engine and 945$ for labor it was done at an independent shop it just came out of warranty and it had 56000 miles on it at time of failure. they came back to me about the reason why they wouldn’t pay for the parts (used engine). it turns out that the parts shop on their invoice they wrote the VIN number of the car which the used engine came from under the description and according to Claim Administrator the VIN doesn’t match my car’s VIN and not in the database of affected cars,… Read more »
I have a 2014 Volkswagen Passat that only had 95k miles when the timing chain went out and it says it is not part of the lawsuit is there anything I can do to included my car in the lawsuit?
Mr. Gonzalez: We have seen a handful of cases where the vehicle was not included in the class action settlement but actually did have the defective timing chain tensioner on the vehicle. You should have a mechanic confirm which version of the tensioner is on your vehicle and, if it is the defective one, you may still have a claim.
Steve Webster
Thank you for your response Steven I had the timing chain changed in April of this year I paid $2,600 for that repair on my recipe from the VW dealership it does show that they replaced the tensioner how do I find out what version it was on my recipe it shows they put 2 tensioners on one is the model 06k109467Q and the other one is 06h109467AQ the reason Im a little upset is because now they are saying that one of my pistons is bad in the motor and they said it could have been caused by the… Read more »
I also tried to work things out with the dealership but all they want me to do is trade my car in for 1000 dollars and buy a new Passat but I just don’t trust that they are telling me the truth and they are the only VW dealer in my city the next closest one is 150 miles away
Steven, any advice for me? I purchased my daughter a 2010 Jetta in Nov 2018. I never received any notice of this litigation. I did check the VIN for recalls before I purchased it and this didn’t come up. Now I have a code on my vehicle and a mechanic told me it’s the timing chain. Do I go to VW and have them diagnose? Are they required to repair? I called them and they told me that if they can confirm it is the tensioner they would, but I am just not sure if I should trust them. Appreciate… Read more »
Ok for us idiots, which version on tensioner is the culprit? Not that id even know crud about this. I really dont feel like its our responsibility to be the investigators….
I dont think your part of this lawsuit.only reason is that a defective tensioner was found …some cars timing chains do give out for poor maintenance or high usage
I received my check they only reimbursed me for the labor cost to have a second hand engine installed but not the cost of the engine itself 😠
Anyway I called the number on the letter and they will take a look at the my claim again.
Received the check today. $1572 to be exact to replace the defective tensioner, timing chain and guide (No engine damage, just did it proactively). The claim was submitted 12 months ago after getting the repair job done at local VW dealer.
My mechanic recommended that I do this proactively too. It cost me $2k. Now have $2k back. Yay. After the oil consumption problem that Audi had to fix plus this incident, no more VW / Audi products for me.
Received my check yesterday (8/19). It was for exactly 70% of the cost of the new engine (per the payout table) plus exactly $2,000. Depositing this thing and putting the ordeal behind me; and never buying another VW again…shame, since I like some of the Audi’s out now!
Still haven’t gotten my check!! They didn’t have my apt number in the system!! Even though I called numerous times checking on my claim!! On top of that my amount was wayyyy off!! Not happy!! Will never buy or recommend a VW EVER AGAIN!!
So sorry, Jennifer! I called to confirm they have the right address for me, which they did, but I still haven’t received my check yet and it’s been a week. They told me to give it two weeks and if it doesn’t come, 90 days have to go by without it being deposited before they can reissue it. So over VW and all this BS.
Finally got my check for $2,014. Upstate NY.
Finally got my check for $2,014 on 8/19/2019. Upstate NY.
FYI: Money received from this settlement IS taxable and will be reported to the IRS but the law office. It must be reported on 1099 Box 3 per the IRS. The only class action settlement money that isn’t taxable is when the lawsuit is due to bodily harm.
Gotta love our system. The money I paid out of pocket to fix this issue back in 2017 was essentially already counted towards the income that would’ve been filed on that year’s tax return. Hence, that income was already taxed…Greedy Uncle Sam
So Uncle Sam taxed my income when I earned it then wants to tax it again after it has been refunded to me. That is double dipping & highly unethical
I think it’s a possibility there might be another payment but not sure.because I did call for an explanation on payment but all they said is they followed the table and these are the initial payments. As of now they aren’t sure about future payments.so I mean she made it sound as if theres something in future. But if there isn’t I’m fine with this
After reading the top portion of the letter with the check, it should state whether or not your check “fully satisfies your claim” or not.
https://timingchainlitigation.com/Content/Documents/Settlement%20Agreement.pdf
Page 25 and 26 list the “settlement class representatives” for which $2500 awards are to go to. Has anyone NOT listed there received an extra amount?
Yeah there seems to be a bunch of people not listed on there getting extra money
I live in WI. Received my check today. Was expecting 50% of $5,200 engine rebuild based on payment table listed in the settlement, but I got a little under $4,800. Not sure how the math works out, but honestly I’m not even going to dig into it. Cashed that check as soon as I got it!
What percentage of the claim settlements have been mailed? I’m Ohio and nothing yet.
also, my engine just went out, 2013 tiguan with 93,500, meticulous maintenance
Do I have any chance of some additional reimbursement??
Hi Tom,
I’m sorry to hear that. If you had your car repaired at a Volkswagen dealership, you should have a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty on the work done. I had to have my engine replaced due to the timing chain malfunction. That was the coverage I received. The dealer should be responsible for additional repairs.
Received mine today in GA. They should have supplied information on how they calculated this. I had a full engine rebuild at $5500, I was expecting 60% or $3300. I received $4800. So $1500 extra. Where can I read the details of this extra 2k or 2.5k that people are saying?
Got my check today in TN. It was set to be around $2500 according to the table, but ended up being $5000 which is what I actually paid for a complete engine rebuild. Even though it took almost 2years from when my engine jumped timing, it was a nice surprise to get all of my money back from this catastrophe. It is safe to say that I will not be buying another Volkswagen though. Cheers to all as we finally receive what Volkswagen owes us
Why are some people getting an extra $2500 and some ain’t? Is everyone suppose to get an extra $2500?
I’m in chicago and my check has arrived .about 7200 plus cant really tell how they came up with it because my cost were 8200 and according to their table I’d be due over 5700 .but if we do get 2000 or 2500 more then math is off but I’m still satisfied but will call for explanation.
Check arrived today for expected amount :). I am located in Pennsylvania
You got your check today ,8-19-19?
Yes, and I immediately deposited it but, now I’m wondering where the extra $2000 I’m due is. Perhaps, there will be another wave of dispurments because, the litigation page does state these these are ‘initial’.
