Which Audi vehicles have this timing chain tensioner?
On March 3, 2015, Audi issued a technical service bulletin identifying the following models and model years with the 3.0 Liter TFSI engine that may be experiencing this issue:
- Audi A4 (2011-2015)
- Audi A5 (2013-2015)
- Audi A5 Cabriolet (2011-2015)
- Audi A6 (2011-2015)
- Audi A7 (2012-2015)
- Audi A8 (2013-2015)
- Audi Q5 (2013-2015)
- Audi Q7 (2011-2015)
What is causing this timing chain tensioner issue?
According to the Technical Service Bulletin, the rattling noise is caused by one of the upper chain tensioners. Although the Bulletin states that the issue causing the noise will not result in damage, some consumers have complained that it may cause deterioration of certain metal parts with metal flakes ending up in engine oil.
What does Audi recommend to fix this issue?
For Audi vehicles experiencing this rattling noise on cold start, Audi recommends replacement of the original tensioners with “improved chain tensioner[s].” Specifically, according to the Bulletin, “If the rattling noise comes from the area of the timing chains (back of the engine) for 1-3 seconds after the first start of the day, replace both upper chain tensioners of bank 1 and bank 2 with the optimized chain tensioners.”
Has there been a recall of the timing chain tensioners on the Audi 3.0 Liter TFSI Engines?
Despite the recommendation to replace the chain tensioners with the improved version, there has been no recall for these parts.
